Holidays are fast approaching and Americans are busier than ever these days and, as we make more and more personal and business contacts, keeping track of holidays, birthdays, anniversaries, graduations, housewarmings, weddings, and other special occasions can seem as daunting a task as climbing Mount Everest. Listed below are the top 3 reasons that soy candles make the perfect gift for anyone on your shopping list:

1) According to the National Candle Association, candles are used in 7 out of 10 households and both men and women consider candles to be a highly appreciated gift for a wide variety of occasions. Soy candles also support American farmers, last longer, and clean up easily with water.
2) The vast majority of candles sold by major candle companies are made with paraffin wax, a petroleum by-product.
Why not give a gift you can feel good about? Most people love candles and many now burn soy candles exclusively.
3) If, when you think of soy candles, jelly jar candles with checkered ribbons come to mind, think again.

There are soy candles for virtually every type of personality available to consumers. From Chinese Ginger to Grape Bubblegum to Nag Champa, the days of generic candles scents are over.
With most candles costing less that $20, it is very difficult indeed to find a more popular, welcomed gift at such an affordable price. It does not get any better than a soy candle.

Soy Wax The Best Thing in Candles in 100 Years

Sure, you’ve heard of soy wax candles, but are really better than ordinary candles? How has the humble soybean carved a sizable niche in the candle marketplace in just a few short years?

Today’s candle buyers are primarily women under the age of 44 with children. These sharp consumers are no longer satisfied with shoddy candles that can cause illness and mess. Here are some reasons why soy wax candles are fast gaining popularity.

Environmentally Friendly and Good for US Farmers

American soybean growers produce around three billion bushels of soybeans each year, making natural soybean wax a reliable product grown from a sustainable resource. Paraffin, a finite by-product of the petroleum industry, is not.

American farmers profit from the soybean wax candle industry, whereas every paraffin wax candle purchased ultimately profits foreign oil moguls. Burning petroleum products also contributes to global warming. Burning soy candles does not increase the CO2 level in the atmosphere, whereas oil-based paraffin candles produce airborne, thick black soot and accompanying toxic fumes. More consumers wishing to support a “greener,” cleaner environment and a better US economy are buying soy candles.

Better Air Quality with Soy Candles

You’ve no doubt seen soot on walls, artwork, draperies, and furnishings in homes, bars, churches, and other interior spaces that burn candles. That same black soot gets inside the humans, animals and plants inhabiting that space as well. While some of the soot can be deterred through careful wick trimming and keeping candles out drafts, any candle whose main ingredient is a by-product of gasoline production will generate petro-soot.

While unscented, undyed, 100% soy candles do produce an infinitesimal amount of “white soot” that cannot be eliminated, it is unseen by the naked eye and is not dangerous to health. If fragrances and dyes are added, the soy candles is no longer “all natural,” which, of course, increases the instance of black soot, but a scented soy wax candle with a few drops of dye is still healthier than a paraffin wax candle. More people are opting for alternatives today that are less detrimental to their health.

Note that most homeowner’s policy may not cover damage done if your home becomes shrouded in black candle soot: policies often differentiate between harmful events that occur suddenly (covered) from those that develop over time (not covered). Care to gamble which one paraffin candle use falls under?

Soy Throws a Strong Scent

One of the greatest complaints about paraffin wax candles is that consumers feel disappointed after their new candle loses its scent once purchased. Why does this happen? Paraffin candle manufacturers often pour their candles at high temperatures, causing a great deal of fragrance to rise to the top or evaporate out of the candles. They may smell great for a while, but then have little or no scent (or perhaps a trace of that not-so-lovely crayon smell) a short time after.

And then there are those who claim to “triple-scent” their candles, which is nothing but hooey. Any type of candle wax has a predetermined amount of scent it can hold and adding more than that will degrade the candle. The scent oil ratio won’t “go up to eleven,” no matter how much a manufacturer may wish it to.

So what’s the best way to get a gloriously scented candle that smells great all the way to the bottom? Look for a hand-made 100% soy wax candles made in small batches by experienced candle makers. Beware of wax blends made from 90% soy oil mixed with other “filler” oils such as cottonwood, corn, carnauba, paraffin, or others marketed as “all-soy.” They will not burn the same. Soy wax has a lower melting point, translating into cooler burning candles and faster scent dispersion. Even the last inch of an all-soy candle smells wonderful.

Unlike mass-produced paraffin candles, most all-soy candles made by reputable candle makers are hand-poured when the candle wax cools and becomes “slushy.” That is the optimal time to mix the fragrance oil in slowly, suspending it throughout the cooling wax. This assures that the candle is saturated with scent from top to bottom. The public has discovered that while soy candles cost a bit more for hand-production, it is preferable to the disenchantment of yet another pricey, big-name candle that didn’t last or became stale.

Soft, Creamy Color

Consumers have come to embrace the naturally-muted, milky color of soy wax candles. Unadulterated soy wax can be dyed in nearly every lovely shade, always retaining a certain subdued, gentle hue. Many of today’s candle lovers prefer this to a paraffin wax that gives candles a greasy or oily appearance.

Natural Wicks go well with Soy

Natural cotton or hemp wicks are slow to burn through a candle. They mosey down to the bottom like molasses, unlike their zinc/lead wick cousins who zip through paraffin candles as fast as lightning. Since soy candles burns cooler and thus longer, natural wicks are a perfect partner for them.

Beware of candles with wire stems in the middle of the wick; they probably contain lead, which along with zinc is toxic when burned. Zinc and lead were banned from US candle manufacturing in the 1970′s, but our government still allows overseas importation of candles containing these harmful chemicals. Buying soy wax candles drastically increases the chances that consumers won’t be getting products with lead wicks.

Easy Clean Up and Recycling

One of the top reasons the public has come to love soy candles is due to how easy the wax is to clean up. You know how difficult it is to remove paraffin wax from rugs, furniture, or even the jar the candle came in. Unlike paraffin, soy wax is water-soluble and spills can easily be cleaned up with hot soapy water. When the wax is gone, a soy candle container can be washed in the dishwasher and reused, repurposed, or recycled. It’s a good thing!

Consumers want Quality

Most people do not know what they are getting when they buy a candle, since ingredients are not required to be listed. And while awareness is growing slowly, consumers know they do want a great product and are starting to check the contents of their candles and the reputations of the candle makers, which is an excellent start.

Soy wax candle making is becoming quite popular. Soy wax is all natural (since they come from soy beans), can have a natural aroma (or have one added), and burns cleanly. It is well known that paraffin wax emits a soot which makes it ‘bad’ to breathe in. Excessive amounts of soot can also ruin your walls and ceilings. It is partially for these reasons that soy candles are becoming so popular.

Candle makers love working with soy wax for many reasons but one of the best reasons is its clean up. Soy wax cleans up very nicely using just plain warm water and soap. Now try that with paraffin wax!!

Making soy wax candles is very easy. Simply purchase some wax, dye, fragrances, wicks and containers and you are on your way – very inexpensively. My guess is that you could buy all these for less than $20. Starter kits run $20 to $30.

Probably the best way to start making soy candles is to buy some soy wax (they come in chips), some color chips (usually add one color chip per pound of wax), some fragrance (usually about 1 fluid oz per pound of wax), wicks (usually one per candle ; ) and a container or two.

You can melt the wax in a double boiler or just stick a smaller pan (with the wax to be melted) in a larger pan of boiling water.

Soy wax is one of the types of materials used in creating natural candles. It has been a very special favorite among a lot of companies who create such candles because of various reasons. One is that it is easy to harvest and soy plants are easy to grow. Compared to beeswax candles, it is easier to find and you do not have to wait for the bees to do their thing before you can have a good amount to make into natural candles. Another reason is that such a type of material is also quite pure in the sense that its color is neutral and you can add almost all types of color to it. Mixing in essential oils to give it a certain scent is also very easy and the scent will be diffused in the air well.

A lot of companies create soy wax candles because more and more people are now going for natural candles. And because soy wax is easy to harvest and easy to find, its price is also not that steep so more and more consumers choose this. If you have a good hold in the market, then that means also a good amount of income for you.

One of the major things that companies do to differentiate their soy wax candles from other kinds of candles in the market is by creating various scents for such candles. Some experts in the industry say that there are companies which create a good list of scents for one season and another list for another season. They even compare it to the fashion industry where a collection is made for each season. This is the same for soy wax candles but instead of design, they work with the scents.

Since the first spark of fire, humans have been fascinated with the flame. We’ve made candles or torches out of grass, wood, cloth, wax and oil. We’ve used candles to light out way, signal our comrades and honor our deities.
Modern candles are made from many sources, much like times past. Many candles are made with bees’ wax or paraffin. Recently, the soybean plant’s wax has been refined to a meltable, wickable substance. Many claim that soy wax candles burn cleaner and carry scent additives better than other mediums. They also boast soap and water clean up.

The soybean plant’s first home is recorded as Asia. Many doctors and scientist have long touted the benefits of the soybean as an excellent source of protein, when added to the diet. Farmers have fed the plants and beans to their live stock hoping to ‘beef ‘ up their diet. Post world wars, it was sold as an additive to flour to enhance the diet and make the meager supplies go farther.

Today, soybean can be found in a variety of everyday items from baked goods to nail polish remover. The versatility of the soybean plant is amazing. And to think, it supports our farmers, too.

There are many people who enjoy soy candles and there are many reasons why these people enjoy using soy candles. They can only be enjoyed though if they know how to use them safely. There are several guidelines that should be followed if you want to do just this.

1. Never leave a burning candle unattended

This has got to be the number one rule about burning candles or indeed about any situation where you are using fire. An unattended candle can be a very dangerous thing. If it gets out of control, it can potentially cause a lot of damage in a short amount of time. If you have to leave the candle for any amount of time, put it out first.

2. Keep candles out of reach of children and pets

Children and pets are not always careful and could easily knock a lit candle over, risking injury or causing a fire. Even though soy wax candles burn at a lower temperature than other types of candles, it is still safer to keep children and pets at a safe distance.

3. Only burn candles on a heat resistant, level, stable surface

You should not burn soy candles on anything that could catch on fire. Use something heat resistant to stand them on, such as a metal candle holder. Always make sure that they are standing on a level, stable surface so that they cannot tip over.

4. Keep candles away from curtains, lampshades, plants or hanging objects

Make sure there is nothing hanging nearby that could catch on fire. If a fire starts, there could be a lot of damage done to your property.

5. Remove all packaging before burning

This is to ensure there is nothing attached to your soy candles that could catch on fire. Remove all wrappers, bows and decorations to avoid any potential risk.

6. Always extinguish a candle and allow it to cool before moving it

Moving around a lit soy candle can be dangerous if the person carrying it trips, drops it or bumps into another person, due to the flame. It must be allowed to cool first so there is no chance of any hot melted wax being spilt as well.

7. Use a candle snuffer to extinguish a candle

Blowing out a lit candle could cause melted wax to be blown out of the candle, coating whatever is behind it in hot wax. A candle snuffer extinguishes a candle by depriving it of oxygen, ensuring that it is put out safely.

By following these guidelines, you too can enjoy your candles in safety.

History

In 3,000 BC, the Egyptians used wicked candles, but the Romans dipped papyrus in melted tallow or beeswax. The Chinese molded their candles in paper tubes, using rice paper for the wick. Even in India, they used the wax from boiling the fruit of the cinnamon tree to make candles. During the Middle Ages, candles became more prevalent in worship. These beeswax candles were made much like the Romans made their candles with tallow. In Colonial America, the early settlers discovered that they were able to obtain a very appeasing wax by boiling the berries from the bayberry shrub.

In the 18th century, the whaling industry thrived and as a result, whale oil was available in large quantities. The spermaceti wax candle did emit a rather unpleasant smell, but the wax was hard enough to hold shape in the hot summer months. The first patented candle making machines were introduced a this time. It was also right around this same time that a chemist named Michael Eugene Chevreul identified for the first time that tallow or animal fat consisted of fatty acids. In 1825, Chevruel and another chemist named Joseph Gay Lussac patented a process for candle making from crude stearic.

The braided wick was also invented in the 19th century. The braided wick was tightly plaited and a portion of the wick curled over and enabled it to be completely consumed. This led to the commercial production of paraffin, which is an oil distillate. The paraffin was also blended with stearic acid, which hardened the wax and created a superior and cheaper candle. Candles now experienced a secondary role as a light source and were saved for emergencies. In 1991, Michael Richards originally founded his company Candleworks to manufacture beeswax candles. In July 1991, Michael Richards experimented with a wide range of vegetable waxes and plant oils. He continued testing natural waxes for several years, including a wider range of tropical and domestic plant oils, while researching and developing other vegetable wax candles. This work resulted in a report entitled “Increasing the Use of Soybeans in the Manufacturing of Candles” for the Iowa Department of Agriculture. In 2001, Cargill purchased the intellectual property from Michael Richard’s soy wax invention.

In 2002, Michael Richards launched a nation-wide guild of candle manufacturers called “Village Chandler”. This guild is committed to using soy wax in candle manufacturing production.

.

Soy Candles

The main difference is that, instead of the regular paraffin wax, they are made from a special kind of wax known as soy wax. Soy wax is actually soybean oil that has been hydrogenated. At that time, there was an increasing demand for candles that are natural. At present, soy wax is available in both pellet and flake form. As with regular paraffin candles, these candles can be molded in different shapes and sizes, with a variety of designs.
However, they also differ from regular candles in several ways. This is a good property for candle makers, as this property makes soy wax an easier medium to work with and to mold. When placed in direct sunlight, they can end up melting and the wax can become unstable.

Since natural wax candles made of Soy or Palm waxes are hitting the market in a big way, these specialized candles will have your products standing out. Representing one of the large candle companies selling their Soy candles or Palm wax candles puts you completely at their mercy. No matter how it looks on paper, the large natural wax candle companies are making the profits.
When you do the candle parties, the cost to the company is less than having them hire an ad agency and doing promotional campaigns. Why do they never offer you a discount off the actual selling price of the candle?

Finding Your Niche

Candles can be made from all sorts of candle wax: Paraffin, Soy wax, Palm wax or beeswax. You may want to consider making the natural wax candles because they come from natural sources, rather than paraffin wax which is derived from petroleum. For the purpose of this article, we will assume you have chosen to make Soy wax candles your specialty. Soy wax can be purchased for $1. 00 and more per pound. Quantity purchasing of course reduces the cost per pound, but beeswax still will always cost more. ” Most candle suppliers have step-by-step instructions for the do-it-yourselfer. It’s profitable for them to have you become a success and for you to continue buying your supplies from them.

Consider Soy Candle Parties Kits

Soy candle making kits is a good place to start. I suggest purchasing one of their Soy wax candle making kits which range in price from $49 to $150 and come with basic instructions. The best and most successful businesses are those that the owners actually enjoy doing. Calculate the cost of buying a minimal amount of Soy wax and supplies to make your first batch of candles. Divide the cost of your supplies and your time by the number of Soy candles that could be produced. Now, research some of the candle websites to find out what would be a good MSRP for the same type, style, and size of candle. Lean towards making as much profit as possible.

Give your product a real value. Finding Customers to Purchase Your Handmade Soy Candles. It has been proven that if you give a little away, your customers will return and purchase much more. As you are learning to make quality Soy candles, give them to these select few. Don’t give away your major candle product. Doing it this way won’t consume too much of your initial candle making supplies. If you play your cards right, they may even suggest that you do candle parties and offer becoming your first hostesses. Your future party network is in the beginnings of becoming a reality. Talk to your product testers that you recruited from friends and family. Hosting candle parties in retirement homes, trailer parks, recreation halls, etc. Conducting parties in homes provides a relaxed and informal atmosphere that promotes personalized attention to your customers. Focus on the Soy candle party being a party instead of a sales event, and it will be easier for you to think of the guests to invite. Three days before the event, personally call each person on your guest list to remind them of the upcoming event. Remember, you are putting on a social event, not just a sales party for Soy candles. If your guests are concentrating on being thirsty and hungry, they won’t hear a word about your Soy candle products. Include little information cards next to the candles indicating the fragrance of the candles. Create an inviting center display of your products. Maybe consider surrounding your display with real or silk flowers and ivy or consider tastefully arranged fruit. A few different Soy tea light candles in an organza bag that your customers can enjoy while at home. If you are not hosting the party, remember your hostess or party planner.
