Since the first spark of fire, humans have been fascinated with the flame. We’ve made candles or torches out of grass, wood, cloth, wax and oil. We’ve used candles to light out way, signal our comrades and honor our deities.
Modern candles are made from many sources, much like times past. Many candles are made with bees’ wax or paraffin. Recently, the soybean plant’s wax has been refined to a meltable, wickable substance. Many claim that soy wax candles burn cleaner and carry scent additives better than other mediums. They also boast soap and water clean up.
The soybean plant’s first home is recorded as Asia. Many doctors and scientist have long touted the benefits of the soybean as an excellent source of protein, when added to the diet. Farmers have fed the plants and beans to their live stock hoping to ‘beef ‘ up their diet. Post world wars, it was sold as an additive to flour to enhance the diet and make the meager supplies go farther.
Today, soybean can be found in a variety of everyday items from baked goods to nail polish remover. The versatility of the soybean plant is amazing. And to think, it supports our farmers, too.
